Below The Surface

Some double page spreads from a children's book I made when I was doing my illustration degree at the University of Edinburgh..

A double page spread from a picture book. The background is a water-textured dark blue and purple colour. At the bottom edge of the page there is a line of grey rocks and a selection of exotic under-water plants in the colour scheme black, light blue, yellow and magenta. Beyond this in the background and further up on the page there is a fairground with a variety of rides in a yellow and black colour scheme. Lots of tiny characters can be seen having fun including tiny versions of the two main characters. There are air bubbles floating up from each character and some of the rides. Above all this towards the top of the page is the text in black highlighted against a textured squiggle shape.

The spot illustration on the bottom left hand corner is round and of three yellow juggling balls bobbing underwater against a dark blue background with white bubbles floating upwards off them. The right hand page has the two main characters in the foreground. There is a yellow insect-inspired character with a blue bowler hat and yellow feathers looking surprised. The character on the right is dark blue and insect-inspired with three yellow fuggling balls bouncing off it's head and a smaller yellow insect-creature colliding with it. In the background and distance there is a line of grey rocks with underwater plants and a black and yellow fairground.

There are two insect-inspired creatures swimming fast in the same direction as the line of rocks. One is yellow and the other is stripy dark blue and yellow. There is a third larger dark blue insect-inspired creature pulling another smaller creature from out of a plant along the rock line. There is black text in the bottom lefthand side od the spread and top right hand side.

Beneath the text there are four insect-inspired creatures happily hugging together. The creatures have a yellow and dark blue colour scheme. On the lefthand side of the spread is two bigger insect-inspired creatures, the one on the left being yellow with a dark blue bowler hat with yellow feathers and a dark blue bow tie and nose. The character on the right is dark blue apart from around the eyes and lopsided mouth which is yellow. The two creatures are happily hugging. There are small white air bubbles rising up from the all the creatures, and the scene is a relative close up of them all just showing their heads and torsos.
